Songkhram River Basin is the third largest Mekong tributaries after the Mun-Chi River Basins. It has a catchment area of 13,139 km2 or approximately 8.21 million rai. Geologically, it is located on layered rock salt of Sakon Nakhon Basin, where Phu Phan mountain range lying over the southwest of the basin known as its headwaters. Due to geological pan-basin area of the Lower Songkhram River Basin and high water level of Mekong River during rainy season, the area is frequently flooded for 2-3 months. Moreover, it suffers from drought over the most of areas.
